Following the Whig party doctrine that a Congressman should step down after one term to give others a chance at the seat, Lincoln did not seek re-election. He backed his onetime commander, Zachary Taylor, in his successful bid for the Whigs’ presidential nomination and the White House in 1848. Lincoln hoped to be rewarded with a lucrative patronage job in Washington, but he was offered only the governorship of the Oregon Territory. Accepting would have effectively ended his political career, so he declined.
Some three regiments of Indians from the Five Civilized Tribes of Oklahoma, mostly Cherokees, had joined Confederate troops in Missouri. Ironically, they reasoned that the very southerners who had driven them out of their homelands would give them more freedom in the Confederacy than they had in the United States. All that prevented the Indians from joining the Confederate army was the Union blockade of the Mississippi River. In southwestern Minnesota, a major uprising of desperately poor Sioux demanded Lincoln’s attention late in 1862.
Ten years later, Lincoln, representing a slave owner, argued that members of a Kentucky slave family brought to Illinois for seasonal labor were not state residents and consequently not freed by the state’s antislavery laws. But Lincoln was overruled, and the slaves were set free. What’s clear is that Lincoln the idealist was also a realist, a pragmatist, and a politician.
