On June 28th, 1914, Serbia's national day (Vidovdan), a young Serb, Gavrilo Princip, acting on instructions from one of the many secret societies inspired from Belgrade, assassinated the Archduke in the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo. The war party in Austria saw this as an opportunity to crush Serbia and remove the menace to the Monarchy.
