18 The NAACP Image Awards The NAACP Image Awards are presented annually to African Americans who are positive role models. The awards are given to people in the arts for their performances or their devotion to social justice. The NAACP has expressed concern about the portrayal of African Americans in the media ever since 1915, when the group protested the movie Birth of a Nation. The movie, a big hit, depicted African Americans as savages. The NAACP Image Awards ceremony is televised live across the nation every year.

I thought to myself: What? Only unattractive people get hooked on crack? What a stupid stereotype. ”1 Berry wanted to prove to both movie insiders and the public that she was more than just a pretty face. She finally persuaded Lee to let her try out for the part of Vivian. Impressed by her talent, Lee hired her. Playing Vivian was a challenge that Berry did not take lightly. Then, in 1989 he gained fame for directing Do The Right Thing, a fiery film about race relations. In 1990 Lee was casting another movie, to be called Jungle Fever.
