The fish appears to demand a continual input of nematocyst toxin in order to maintain its immunity. Nibbling behavior has probably developed to provide ingestion of the toxin after acclimation has nearly or completely inhibited discharge of nematocysts into the epidermis. A further usage of the parasitologists' approach is found in the concepts of susceptibility and immunity. Susceptibility infers that a host possesses the essential niche requirements of its symbionts. Immunity indicates that a susceptible host has gained effective defenses against infection, establishment, or maintenance of the parasite.
